Manning Bill Helps Gas Consumers Save Money
Rep. Judy Manning Supports Bill
Saving Gas Consumers Money
Legislation to Address Natural Gas Problems
Recent years have been very cold and consumers in Georgia felt it in
the wallet when they got their natural gas bills. This lead the legislature
to address consumer concerns about rising gas prices and poor service
by natural gas marketers.
The General Assembly passed SB 217, which will implement two measures
aimed at controlling natural gas prices. First, the bill will allow consumers
to change gas marketers at least once per year without service charges.
This provision will help consumers leave high-price or low- service marketers.
Representative Manning worked hard to support this bill.
The bill will also require the PSC to regularly publish the prices being
charged by Georgia gas marketers. By widely publishing natural gas rates,
the bill aims to help consumers locate the cheapest gas available and
change to that marketer with no penalty.
SB 217 passed with overwhelming support from legislators, who hope to
avoid energy problems like those encountered in California. Lawmakers
indicated the bill would be only the first in a series of steps to address
natural gas issues in Georgia.
“
I supported this important bill and urged my fellow house members to
do the same. We must keep gas prices in line, especially for elderly
and other people on fixed incomes. Customers do have rights and they
must be protected from abuse.” Rep. Judy Manning.
