Judy's Support for Senior Citizens
“I AM A SENIOR CITIZEN LIKE YOU…or your
parents and I UNDERSTAND THE PROBLEMS we can face, like: out of control
medical expenses, spiraling
drug costs, social security changes, increasing property taxes, fixed incomes,
unfair school taxes, difficulties with transportation, and the list goes
on and on. I have worked hard to find solutions to these problems and I
will continue to do so. Solving our aging problems is my number one priority.”
Judy
Manning, State Representative, District 32
A FEW OF JUDY’S RECENT EFFORTS ON BEHALF OF SENIOR CITIZENS
•
Cancer Legislation and Colon-Rectal Screening- Cancer is a terrible disease
that kills and causes thousands to suffer every year in Georgia. Judy supported
and voted to fund the states major initiative against cancer, the Georgia
Cancer Coalition. This program will make available to all Georgians the
best cancer science and technology in the nation, especially for those
who suffer in the greatest numbers, our seniors.
•
Award -Winning Legislator- Judy’s tireless work with many disability
groups and her support of legislation for the disabled earned her the 2002
Award as the Council of Developmental Disabilities Legislator of the Year.
•
Patient Protection From Bad Doctors- Too many times patients,
and especially elderly patients, have problems with bad doctors and the
releasing of their
private information. Georgia House Bill 156, supported by Judy, will allow
patients to check up on doctors on the Internet concerning malpractice
suits, disciplinary actions, and professional training. Future bills will
shield public disclosure of medical and patient data unless the patient
approves it. ( Contact: www.medicalbcard.state.ga.us)
•
Wellstar Volunteer and Board Member- Judy has been concerned about senior
health issues for years. After serving as a Wellstar Kennestone volunteer
for 30years, she has been asked to serve on the Wellstar Health System
Regional Board of Directors.
•
Property Tax “Freeze”- Judy also sponsored important legislation
that raises our homestead exemptions to offset any increases in City or
County property taxes. This legislation will save senior residents hundreds
of dollars every year. Her legislation benefits homeowners in Marietta,
Kennesaw and unincorporated Cobb.
•
New Senior Center For North Cobb- All areas of Cobb have
senior centers for first-rate programs and activities. These are not “ hot
meal” programs,
but full-scale centers for seniors to mix and mingle with their friends
and peers. Thanks to Judy Manning and other public officials, a senior
center for North Cobb is open at Kennworth Park. This is a dream
come true.
•
Increased Care Options For The Elderly- For years the
elderly and the handicapped have been stuck on “ Waiting Lists” forcing
them to stay at home without proper care. Judy Manning sponsored the legislation
to push
the program known as “Unlocking the Waiting Lists.” As a result,
Georgia will not only provide more and better healthcare for groups like
the elderly, it will decrease costs since home and community care costs
less than hospitalization or nursing home care. “The key factor
is Better Care at a Lower Cost!” Judy Manning.
Future Programs That Representative Manning Is Working ON For You
•
The Elimination of all property taxes for all Cobb County
Seniors over 65 years of age. “By age 65, Seniors have paid their
share to cities and the county.” Judy Manning
•
The Elimination of Schools Taxes for all Seniors over
60. “Seniors
usually have grown kids with their own kids. As seniors, why are they
still paying school taxes?” Judy Manning
•
Finding new ways to reduce drug costs for seniors. “Our nations
seniors, and Georgia’s seniors are being robbed of the “Good
Life” in their senior years by the scourge of high drug costs.
This disrespectful ‘robbing’ of our seniors is a national
disgrace and must be stopped.” Judy Manning
“Judy gets it done while others sit around
and talk about it. She is one of the Best Friends Senior Citizens have
at the State Capital.” U.S.
Congressman Johnny Isakson.
